Open source communities often believe that successful conferences require large budgets, dedicated staff, expensive event platforms, and corporate infrastructure. My experience with UbuCon India 2025 demonstrated the opposite.
This talk presents a practical framework for organizing a community-driven conference using a lean operational model built around volunteers, open source tools, local partnerships, and transparent processes.
I will share lessons learned from planning and executing UbuCon India 2025, including venue selection, sponsorship strategies, volunteer coordination, speaker management, community outreach, accessibility considerations, content curation, and event operations.
The session will focus on actionable techniques that other open source communities can immediately adopt to launch regional conferences without significant financial resources. Attendees will leave with a reusable blueprint, checklists, and operational principles that reduce complexity while maximizing community impact.
Whether you are organizing an Ubuntu event, Linux User Group gathering, FOSS conference, or developer community meetup, this talk demonstrates how sustainable community events can be built through people, process, and open collaboration rather than budget alone.
