With PEP 779, Python 3.14 marks free-threaded Python as supported and no longer experimental. The exploration phase is over - it's migration time. As per PEP 703, the GIL will be disabled by default by 2028-2030, making migration planning urgent.
This talk covers how to practically migrate existing codebases to the free-threaded build. We will explore best practices for auditing C-extensions, transitioning from multiprocessing to threading, and thread-safe CI pipelines. We will dive deep into the traps developers miss - implicit atomicity loss, false sharing, and single-thread regressions - alongside real production migration stories.
