In the 21 years from the beginning of OpenPrinting up to now we have achieved many nice things, but there is always a lot to do, especially currently, on the way to the New Architecture for printing and scanning, to make everything completely standards-conforming and get rid of obsolete methods and technologies. And this also needs to get integrated in all kinds of systems without loss of any functionality.

With a not so attractive subject as printing it is not easy to find volunteer contributors for growing our team. Therefore we are reaching out by presenting at several conferences and participating in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) every year, but have only a few volunteers contributing on a regular basis.

In this session, Till Kamppeter (OpenPrinting project leader), Zdenek Dohnal (OpenPrinting/Red Hat), Johannes Meixner (SUSE), and Deepak Patankar (OpenPrinting GSoC mentor and former GSoC contributor) will introduce into the current work of OpenPrinting and printing under Linux, present about their community activities and about getting contributor at OpenPrinting.

We will also take some time for questions, answers, and wishes by the audience, and also have additional OpenPrinting team members answering remotely by chat. If time runs out, we can also spontaneously set up a BoF to continue discussion.

Session author bios

Till Kamppeter:
Leader of the OpenPrinting project since it was founded in 2001, introduced the CUPS printing system in Mandrake Linux in 2000 working at MandrakeSoft and with this and a lot of evangelism (booths, talks, tutorials) made the other distros also switch to CUPS, since 2006 printing maintainer at Canonical, co-organizing annual meetings with the Printer Working Group (PWG), since 2008 every year mentoring in Google Summer of Code, doing everything to make printing on Linux and alike operating systems "just work".

Johannes Meixner:
Working at SUSE since many years (more than 20). Started with end-user support primarily for printing issues (too many requests "how to setup my printer" each day). Development of SUSE's printer setup tool (in SUSE's YaST). Over time became SUSE package maintainer for SUSE's basic printing RPMs (CUPS, cups-filters, Ghostscript, Gutenprint). Nowadays usual printing works sufficiently well in general (except sometimes special things in enterprise environments). New main working area since some years: Disaster Recovery

Zdenek Dohnal:
Software engineer at Red Hat with focus on printing and scanning projects, maintaining them in Fedora, CentOS Stream and RHEL for 6 years. CUPS 2.4.x release manager in OpenPrinting project, helping other users with finding out what modern printing has to offer and how it can make their life easier. VIm user and its maintainer in RHEL, CentOS Stream and Fedora as well.
