In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Linux Foundation launched the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) to provide a neutral forum for open source software developers in the motion picture and broader media industries to share resources and collaborate on technologies for image creation, visual effects, animation and sound. The Foundation has seen tremendous growth with the adoption of 14 open source projects including OpenColorIO, MaterialX, OpenVDB, OpenEXR, OpenTimelineIO, Open RV and more. Executive Director David Morin will provide an overview of the Foundation, its hosted projects, and key milestones to date.

David Morin is Executive Director of the Academy Software Foundation, where he works for the Governing Board to develop the use of open source software in the motion picture industry. He has participated in the development of motion capture and 3D software since “Jurassic Park” at companies such as Softimage, Microsoft, Avid Technology, Autodesk and Epic Games. Today he is president of David Morin, LLC, a diversified consultancy specializing in immersive production and open source software. David is also chair of the Joint Technology Committee on Virtual Production of the ASC, and a past co-chair of the Joint Technology Subcommittee on Previsualization. David believes that developing a strong software engineering community is critical to the future of the motion picture industry. David holds a B.Sc.A. in computer science from Laval University (Quebec City, Canada).
